Milestones Continue at 2011 Subaru Ironman CanadaAugust 28, 2011 It has been a day for rewriting the record books here at the 29th Subaru Ironman Canada triathlon. At 7:48 PM PST, David Lee crossed the finish line with a time of 12:48:43, becoming the first ever paraplegic wheelchair athlete to complete the Penticton race.
The 42-year-old American, originally paralyzed in a 1990 motorcycle accident, now crosses this off of his life goals, along with competing in a World Championships (2007 in Bordeaux, France) and Paralympic Games (2008 in Beijing China). Lee has competed in past Subaru Ironman Canada events, but this is his first successful finish.
This amazing and inspirational accomplishment goes along with top female Mary Beth Ellis’ course record time of 9:03:13 and the largest mass start in the history of this event with 2,841 participants. In other news, 2009 champion and Penticton resident Jordan Rapp officially put last year’s devastating injury behind him, winning the men’s side in 8:28:09.

Record Setting Day at 2011 Subaru Ironman CanadaAugust 28, 2011 – Not in the last 29 years has a woman completed Subaru Ironman Canada faster than today’s Mary Beth Ellis of the US, who crossed the finish line with an incredible time of 9:03:13. According to race crew, Ellis passed last year’s champion Meredith Kessler on the bike course at Richter’s Pass and pulled away from the field from then on, finishing over 31 minutes ahead of her closest competitor. As if her day could get any better, by making her push on Kessler at the right time, Ellis also receives the $1,000 Timex Bike Bonus for being the first female athlete to the top of Richter’s Pass. Second and third place were hotly contested in the last quarter of the run, with American Kim Loeffler taking a hard-fought second and Kessler settling for third. Welcomed at the finish line by her husband, Ellis is in for a much needed rest, as she has now won her third Ironman since the beginning of the summer

Not to be outdone, 2009 champion and Penticton resident Jordan Rapp officially put last year’s devastating injury behind him by beating out second place finisher Torsten Abel of Germany and third place Bert Jammaer of Belgium. Finishing with a time of 8:28:09, Rapp took the lead on the bike portion of the course, passing last year’s champion Viktor Zyemstev, and never had reason to look back. However, as a small consolation to Jammaer, he receives the male $1,000 Timex Bike Bonus and becomes the highest finishing Belgian ever in this race.
The event never overshadows the incredible accomplishments of the athletes in it, but the 29th edition of Subaru Ironman Canada sure gave it a shot. Lining up in the waters of the Okanagan were 2,841 eager professional and age-group participants, comprising the largest mass start in Subaru Ironman Canada history. The beautiful conditions continued throughout the race, as athletes swam, biked and ran through sunshine and at times, strong winds.

1. Jordan Rapp, Canada/USA 8:28:09
2. Torsten Abel, Germany 8:41:09
3. Bert Jammaer, Belgium 8:42:34
4. Christopher Bagg, USA 8:47:25

Subaru Ironman Canada’s Story of ChampionsAugust 25, 2011 The storyline could write itself: 2009 Subaru Ironman Canada champion Jordan Rapp, whose injury kept him out of last year’s race, looks to reclaim his title on Sunday, August 28th in the 29th Annual Subaru Ironman Canada triathlon. It will not be an easy task, as last year’s champion, Viktor Zyemtsev, would prefer an ending more in his favour. To add a further twist to the plot, Rapp and Zyemtsev have to contend with 2008 Champion Bryan Rhodes and 2006 Champion Jasper Blake.
On the women’s side of the event, last year’s winner Meredith Kessler will race to add a second Subaru Ironman Canada championship to her growing list of accomplishments.
Zyemtsev, the Ukrainian native, has a total of 8 Ironman wins to his credit. He is the reigning Subaru Ironman Canada champion and a three-time Ironman Austria champion, posting impressive times in the 2002, 2003 and 2004 editions. Zyemtsev added wins at Ford Coeur d’Alene in 2005 and 2007, took the 2006 Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid title and has recently ventured into the half-Ironman distance with a 2010 win in Florida.
Not to be outdone, before his 2010 injury the younger Rapp was writing an impressive resume of his own. In addition to the 2009 Subaru Ironman Canada victory, Rapp set course records in the 2009 editions of Ford Ironman Arizona and the Vancouver International.
Always a threat is Blake, who lives and trains in Victoria, BC. He was the 2006 Subaru Ironman Canada Champion and has been one of the top four finishers three other times here since 2004.
The men’s field also features two multiple Ironman champions, Rhodes and Jason Shortis. New Zealander Rhodes has won Ironman titles four times, including his aforementioned Penticton win in 2008. Shortis of Australia has won five Ironman titles and recently placed third at the 2011 Ford Ironman Lake Placid.
Last year’s female champion Kessler aims to continue her stellar 2010 triathlon campaign, which also had her place second in both Ford Ironman St. George and Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene. Others to watch in the women’s pro field include MacKenzie Madison, who placed third in this event last year; Sara Gross, competing in her seventh Subaru Ironman Canada event, has 5th, 4th, and 2nd place Penticton finishes to her name; and Mary Beth Ellis, a perennial half-Ironman podium finisher.
The 29th edition of the Subaru Ironman Canada triathlon will take place in Penticton, BC and the Okanagan Valley. Athletes will be competing for a $75,000 pro prize and 65 age group qualifying spots for the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

More than 2,800 to Participate in 2011 Subaru Ironman Canada on SundayAugust 25, 2011 This Sunday, August 28th, a record field of professional and age group athletes embark on the challenge of a lifetime at the 29th annual Subaru Ironman Canada Triathlon.
Swimming, biking and running their ways to the title of 2011 Subaru Ironman Canada Champion include last year’s professional winners Viktor Zyemtsev and Meredith Kessler. Sunday will also see the return to Penticton of Jordan Rapp, the 2009 champion, who will be looking to topple Zyemtsev after a devastating injury kept him out of the race last year.
In addition to the prestige of winning the event, Subaru Ironman Canada offers a $75,000 professional prize purse and 65 age group slots for the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
However, for most of the participants, competing in the oldest Ironman event in continental North America is not about the prizes. Emergency doctors and physicians, restaurant owners, a belly dancer, human resource professionals, airline pilots, speech pathologists, stay-at-home parents and many more make up the age group athletes from 18 to 79 representing more than 37 different countries. For these individuals pushing themselves to their physical and mental limits, crossing the finish line and completing their Subaru Ironman Canada journey is the real prize.
Taking place in the scenic Okanagan Valley, the event features a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim in Okanagan Lake followed by a 112-mile (180.2 km) bike ride and a 26.2-mile (42.2 km) marathon that finishes in the along Lakeshore Drive in downtown Penticton.

2011 Subaru Ironman CanadaDecember 1, 2010 To Subaru Ironman Canada 2011 Participants:
After receiving feedback from our athletes, we realize that we did not fully explain the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) oversight issue and for that we apologize. Hopefully, this will clarify the situation:
Due to our administrative error, the 12% HST was not collected on the entry fee for the 2011 Subaru Ironman Canada, an event organized by Ironman Canada Triathlon, Inc (IMC) and licensed by World Triathlon Corporation (WTC). The amount charged to athletes was the $575 entry fee plus the $28.75 Active.com fee. In years past, a Goods and Services Tax (GST) was collected during the registration process.
IMC realizes our mistake and that we are required to submit the HST tax to the government. A number of you have agreed to have the amount of $69 (Canadian Funds) charged to your credit card and we thank you for understanding our error. We ask the remaining athletes indicate their willingness to authorize payment for the HST on their entry fees. If you do not authorize the HST to be charged to your credit card, we will honor your original registration.
Once again we sincerely apologize for the oversight and are committed to delivering the event experience you expect at the Subaru Ironman Canada.
Please respond to this e-mail with one of the following:
_____ I authorize $69 (Canadian Funds) to be charged to the credit card used for my registration.
_____ I authorize the charge of $69 (Canadian Funds), but would like to arrange an alternate form of payment (please provide a phone number where you can be reached and we will contact you to get the information for the alternate form of payment).
_____ I DO NOT authorize the charge of $69 (Canadian Funds) to my credit card.
Thank you,

Zyemtsev and Meredith Kessler Claim Titles at Subaru Ironman CanadaAugust 29, 2010 Victor Zyemtsev of the Ukraine and Meredith Kessler of the USA were winners of the 28th Annual Subaru Ironman Canada. This victory was the seventh for Zyemtsev and the first for Kessler. Zyemtsev finished ahead of Christian Brader and Stephan Vuckovic of Germany. Zyemtsev’s winning time was 8:32:28.
Kiwi Kieran Doe and Canadian Tom Evans were within seconds of each over the first 120km of the ride before Evans dropped off the pace. Doe went on to finish the bike with a 3:58 lead over Canadian Scott Curry and 4:02 over German Christian Bader. Doe’s lead off the bike started to erode 10km into the run as Brader took over the lead with Zyemtsev in the chase. Zyemtsev stayed within a minute of Brader until the 25 km mark, when they came together. The two ran shoulder to shoulder until the final turnaround on Lakeshore Drive where Zyemtsev put in a strong surge propelling him into a small lead over Brader. Brader was not able to match this acceleration and Zyemtsev went on to win the race with Brader finishing just 13 seconds back. Stephan Vuckovic from Germany had a solid run to finish the race in third.
Top five men’s results are below:
1. Viktor Zyemtsev, Ukraine 8:32:28
2. Christian Brader, GER 8:32:41
3. Stephan Vuckovic, GER 8:38:31
4. Petr Vabrousek, CZE 8:39:16
5. Kyle Marcotte, CAN 8:40:45
On the women’s side, defending champion Tereza Macel had a strong swim coming out of the water in first place followed by American Meredith Kessler and Swiss Simone Benz who were just over a minute back. On the bike Macel went on to build a substantial lead over Canadian Heather Wurtele and Kessler coming into the out and back section of the course. It was at this point that Macel’s lead began to evaporate as she struggled to keep up the pace. Over the next 10km the chase pair passed Macel and went to complete the bike portion of the event with Kessler holding a slim 39 second lead over Wurtele. On the run the duo of Kessler and Wurtele stayed close to each other until Kessler put in a surge to open up a 2:13 second lead. Kessler extended her lead to win the event with Wurtele finishing second and a hard charging Mackenzie Madison finishing a distant third.
Top five women’s results are below:
1. Meredith Kessler, USA 9:13:46
2. Heather Wurtele, CAN 9:17:17
3. Mackenzie Madison, USA 9:34:51
4. Gillian Moody, CAN 9:40:10
5. Christie Sym, AUS 9:41:30

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD REFEREEAugust 13, 2009 Dear Athletes,
For this Ironman event, we will be using a slightly modified version of the 2009 USAT Competitive Rules. In summary, we will operate under the “3 strikes and you are out” principle.
. Even though DRAFTING is the only violation to incur a 4-minute time penalty (to be served in the nearest penalty tent, located at various spots on the bike course), any type of violation counts toward your 3 strikes.
Example: 1. DRAFTING violation (4 minutes, served in penalty tent on the bike course)
2. HELMET CHINSTRAP violation (stop-and-go, served in penalty tent on the bike course)
3. LITTERING violation—this is the 3rd violation and results in disqualification (DQ)
Again, any combination of 3 rule violations will result in a DQ. To minimize your misunderstanding of the rules on race day, please take the time to read and understand the following summary of Position Violations and review the 2009 USAT Competitive Rules.
• ALWAYS RIDE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF YOUR LANE to avoid an ILLEGAL POSITION or BLOCKING call
• KEEP FOUR BIKE LENGTHS (7 METERS) BETWEEN YOUR BIKE’S FRONT WHEEL AND THE REAR WHEEL OF THE CYCLIST IN FRONT OF YOU to avoid a DRAFTING call
• ALWAYS PASS ON THE LEFT OF THE CYCLIST IN FRONT OF YOU, NEVER ON THE RIGHT to avoid an ILLEGAL PASS call
• COMPLETE YOUR PASS WITHIN 20 SECONDS to avoid a DRAFTING call
• IF PASSED, DROP BACK FOUR BIKE LENGTHS BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO RE-PASS to avoid an OVERTAKEN or DRAFTING call
You will see a large number of trained referees on the course who will ensure safety and fairness. Triathlon is an individual event, and it is your responsibility to fully understand the rules and avoid penalties. The referees’ ruling is final in the case of Position Violations, and there are no protests or appeals. The following are several other common rules violations:
• HELMET CHINSTRAP—the chinstrap of your helmet must be securely fastened whenever you are on your bike on race day!
• RACE NUMBER—you must display your body race number during the bike and run portions of the race, and your bike number must be properly attached to your bike and be visible from the left!
• LITTERING—do not throw away ANYTHING outside of official aid stations!
• UNAUTHORIZED EQUIPMENT—sorry, absolutely NO MP3 players or other audio devices (yes, that means NO Oakley Thumps™ or Apple iPods®)! No cell phones either!
• OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE—do NOT accept any assistance from anyone other than a race official, and do NOT allow non-racers to ride or run alongside you!
Please remember that even though DRAFTING is the only violation that incurs a 4-minute time penalty, you must go to a penalty tent for any violation to have your number marked, and all violations count toward your 3 strikes. There will be no penalty tents on the run. If you are penalized on the run, the official will mark your number on the spot.
FAILURE TO STOP AT THE PENALTY TENT IS GROUNDS FOR DISQUALIFICATION (DQ)!
Please remember to treat other athletes, all volunteers, and your referees with courtesy and consideration. Not doing so is UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT and may result in disqualification.
I sincerely hope you run a perfect race, have lots of fun, and achieve all your goals.
Jürgen Heise, Head Referee, 2009 Ironman Canada

"Everyday he was forced to test his limits, to achieve them then surpass them. Barney knew the Ironman was not just a race, but rather a lifestyle, a lifestyle in which ordinary men and women can become extraordinary on a daily basis. Some people say you can tell a lot about a person by the way they look. I say, you can tell a lot about a person by the way they live. Barney lived his life to the fullest, and we (the Vigilantes) are honoring that everyday."
